To recognize the distinctive achievements of its sportswomen, BBK DAV College for Women organized Annual Sports Awards Day. In a scintillating ceremony, the college honored 360 players of national and international fame. Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar, MLA, Amritsar South, was the Chief Guest while Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Director Sports, Dean Faculty and Head, Department of Physical Education, GNDU was the Guest of Honour for the event. Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia and Sh. Sudarshan Kapoor, Chairman, LMC welcomed the honorable guests with saplings, symbolic of our enduring bond with Mother Nature. The function started with lamp lighting, chanting of Ved Mantras and DAV Gaan.
Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia presented the Annual Sports Report of the College. In her address she said that sports give us the spirit of sportsmanship and the courage to face defeat. In a world which is falling apart due to deteriorating mental health, in times when there is shocking rise in crime and rate of suicides, it is this spirit that enables one to sail through the tumultuous challenges of life.
While addressing the students, Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar congratulated all the winners. Emphasizing the importance of sports, he said that sports carry a very important place in human life. Sports teach discipline, companionship, teamwork, accountability, self-confidence, responsibility, and self-discipline, and also enhance the physical and mental abilities of the students so as to help them in attaining their goals in life.
In his address, Dr. Sukhdev Singh said that sports should be given importance in every stage of our lives. Just like a diet of healthy nutrients is required for nourishment of the body, similarly playing sports is essential to our mental and physical wellbeing.
During the event, star players who made a mark in international games were awarded with special cash prizes by the college authorities. Tanishka Khatri (Fencing); an Asian Silver Medalist and a participant of World Cup, Vidiya Sakanth (Rowing); a participant of Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic games, were awarded with the cash prize of Rs. 20,000 each by the college. Neha Mann, an ace footballer of international fame was awarded with the title of ‘Best Player’ of the college for the year 2021-22. Former Judo player, Navneet Kaur (Punjab Police) was also honoured for her contribution in the field of sports. Along with this, captains of 7 different sports teams of the college, members of 10 sports clubs, coaches of various games and distinguished media personalities of the city were also honoured during the ceremony. Students of the Department of Physical Education and Department of Music enthralled the audience with Yoga Show and Sufi Gaan presentations respectively. Latest issue of college publication ‘News Bulletin’ was also released.
Sh. Sudarshan Kapoor gave the vote of thanks at the end of the programme. Sh. Sandeep Ahuja, Sh. Rakesh Mehra, Sh. Ved Mitter Dr. K.S. Manchanda, Capt. Sanjeev Sharma, Sh. Balwinder Singh, Smt. Ravinder Kaur, Dr. H.S. Nagpal along with other faculty members of the college were also present during the event.
