The College Honours its Sports Stars at a Glittering Sports Awards Ceremony

To recognize and applaud the sporting prowess of its more than 400 players, BBK DAV College organised Sports Awards Day, graced by Sh. O.P. Soni, Minister of Education & Freedom Fighters (Pb), as Chief Guest & Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Director Sports, Dean Faculty and Head, Deptt. of Physical Education, GNDU as Guest of Honour. Advocate Sh. Sudarshan Kapoor, Chairman, LMC and Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia welcomed the honoured guests with saplings. The function started with a lamp lighting ceremony followed by a mellifluous rendering of DAV GAAN and Chanting of Ved-Mantras.

In her welcome address, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia expressed her great joy and pride over the exponentially rising sports graph of the college. Commending the tireless and co-ordinated efforts of players, physical education department teachers and coaches, she enlisted the whole gamut of facilities and incentives that the college is so liberally providing to boost the performance of the players. Quoting John Greenleaf Whittier, she called upon the players to persist and persevere and never to quit.  She presented the annual sports report and reiterated her commitment to take the college to unprecedented heights in sports as in other academic and co-academic activities.

The players who made their mark at international & national level were awarded cash-prizes, worth Rs. 25,000/- & 10,000/- respectively, in addition to trophies and gold medals. They included Elangban Chauba Devi (International Cyclist), Shshikala Agashe Durgaprasad (Track Cycling), Kavita (Canoeing), Sushma (Canoeing), Komal (Kayaking), Jyoti Bala (Weight Lifting), Gagandeep (Weight Lifting), Anubir (Handball) & Jasjeet Kaur (Pencak Silat). 10 players of the college were honoured for faring exceptionally well in the academics and sports. 9 club members, 7 Captains of national and international championships, coaches & media persons were also honoured on the occasion. The college alumna, Navroop Kaur (Judoka of international level) was honoured for her remarkable contribution to Judo. Jasbir (Football Players) was adjudged the best player of the session 2018-19 on the basis of her amazing performance in academics and sports.

The Chief Guest of the day was immensely pleased at the spectacular achievements of the college in all fields, especially in sports. Addressing the sports women of BBK, he said only the best can be expected from BBK students. He added that the college is another name for excellence which gets redefined here with each passing year. He showered profuse praise on Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia for pushing the college to phenomenal heights.  Sh. O. P. Soni presented a cheque for the earlier grant of Rs 8,00,000 and further  announced a grant of Rs. 5, 00,000/- for enrichment of college sports.

Dr. Sukhdev Singh, the guest of honour congratulated the college for being the highest contributor towards MAKA trophy. He commended BBK DAV for being a leader in sports, both qualitatively and quantitatively. He exhorted the players to accept challenges as opportunities and turn their weaknesses into strengths.

A scintillating cultural programme presented on the occasion turned out to be a show stopper. The main attractions of the programme were a heart-warming ghazal, a peppy folk song and a soul-stirring one act play titled Kalank on the trauma of exploitation of women. The Gatka team of the college also put up a stunning show on the occasion.

The function concluded with Vote of thanks by Sh. Sudarshan Kapoor, followed by National Anthem. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Dr. V.P. Lakhanpal, Sh. M.L. Batra, Prof. Davinder Singh, Captain Sanjeev Sharma, Sh. Vipin Bhasin, Sh. Arwind Sharma, Sh. Arvinder Bhatti, Mrs. Balbir Kaur Bedi, D.E.O. Sh. Salvinder Singh Samra,  Mr. Rakesh Mehra, Sh. Hira Lal Kandhari, Sh. Ved Mittal, Physical Education Department & others faculty members.
