The Eco Club and NSS Unit of BBK DAV College for Women celebrated Earth Day 2024 under the aegis of Punjab State Council for Science & Technology as the State Nodal Agency and Ministry of Environment & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) as the supporting agency, for the Environment Education Programme on 22nd April 2024 to foster awareness and engagement in environmental conservation efforts among the youth, under the able leadership of Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia. The program featured a diverse array of events, including a seminar, a quiz, a poster making competition, and an oath taking ceremony. The seminar commenced with a lecture by Dr. Shweta Mohan, Incharge, Eco Club, on the theme “Planet vs. Plastic” which aimed to raise awareness about the environmental impact of plastic pollution and promote sustainable solutions. It was followed by an insightful lecture by Ms. Surbhi Sethi, Member, Eco Club, on the theme “Environmental Health and Human Existence” which provided attendees with valuable knowledge about the intricate relationship between the environment and human well-being. Dr. Nidhi Aggarwal, Member, Eco Club, gave a lecture on “Embracing the Spirit of Earth Day and Sustainable Development Goals” which provided insights into pressing environmental issues and actionable solutions. Furthermore, a Presentation on the topic “Earth Day 2024” was given by Dr. Palwinder Singh, Member, Eco Club, offering invaluable revelations into the history of Earth Day and its significance in global environmental movements.
An engaging quiz was also conducted by Ms. Surbhi Sethi whereby participants tested their knowledge of environmental issues, sustainable practice, and global conservation efforts.
A poster making competition was also held as part of the Earth Day celebrations. Reetakshi, B. Sc. Med. Sem-II, stood first, Samridhi Kashyap, BBA Sem-II, stood second, Simrat Kaur, B. Com Sem-VI and Riya, +2 Commerce stood third, while Gursheen Kaur, B. Sc. Medical Sem-IV and Sharanjot Kaur, +2 Commerce won the consolation prize. The event culminated with an oath taking ceremony, where Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia, Sh. Sudarshan Kapoor, Chairman, Local Committee, Sh. Vipin Bhasin, Member, Local Committee, Arya Samaj Members, namely Sh. Inderpal Arya, Sh. Rakesh Mehra, Sh. Jawahar Lal, Col. Ved Mitter, Sh. Atul Mehra, Sh. Murari Lal, Smt. Renu Ghai, Principal Dr. Pallavi Sethi, DAV Public School, Amritsar, members of Arya Yuvti Sabha of the college, prominent citizens like Smt. Balbir Kaur Bedi, along with faculty members and students reaffirmed their commitment to protect the planet and adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.
The stage was conducted by Ms. Sumera Narang, PG Department of English. She thanked the participants, speakers, and volunteers for their enthusiastic participation and dedication to environmental stewardship.
