BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar organized a DBT sponsored guest lecture on “Parental Care in Animals” by the Department of Zoology. The resource person for the lecture was Dr. Puja Ohri, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Dr. Ohri discussed about the parental care in different animals. She explained the phenomenon by giving various examples, special reference to social spider Stegodyphus mimosarum.
She diversified the topic by explaining the terms like that of Brood Parasitism and Altruism in detail. She also discussed the Phylogenetic history, Sex role reversal and Cost-benefits of Parental care. She simplified the above-mentioned topic by depicting this phenomenon in various animals in the form of videos. In addition to this, she also interacted with students simultaneously in which students participated with great zeal. Students of B.Sc Medical semester I, III and V attended the lecture. Dr. Rashmi Kalia, Head, Department of Life Sciences, Mrs. Ashima Mehra, Mrs. Anmol Kohli, Mrs. Bhawana, Mrs. Kuljot Kaur and other faculty members were also present. Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia presented a memento to Dr. Ohri.
