NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
NSS unit of the college works for the development and upliftment of society. It enrolled 212 volunteers in the session 2023-24. The college is actively engaged in community service, which helps to inculcate the spirit of service and civic values among the students. Visits to Orphanage and Old Age Home, Mental Hospital, and Institute for the Deaf and Dumb are organized from time to time. Several times, festivals are celebrated with the inmates. The students make collections in kind and cash to share with the inmates. Students are also sensitized to various national problems and are given the training to serve society with a human touch in times of emergency. In the recent past, funds were collected for COVID-affected people. The college participates in various community service programmes organized by Arya Samaj and DAV Institutions.
Under the leadership of Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia, the college remains committed to the cause of community development and service and has adopted five villages under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan: Malawali, Tabowali, Gumtala Suburban, Meerakot, Kalan and Meerakot Khurd. Dr. Walia organises lectures and workshops in these villages to raise awareness about health, environmental, and other crucial issues. Social Entrepreneurship, Swachhta & Rural Engagement Cells have also been formed in the college to promote sustainable rural livelihoods. Additionally, Dr. Walia has also launched the Swachhta Hi Seva and the Kora Kaagaz project which, following the 3 R’s of reduce, reuse, and recycle, reutilizes waste paper to provide free notebooks to the children from slum areas. During the pandemic, Dr. Walia conducted and organised special programmes/welfare measures to provide food to the far-off rural belt of Majitha village, in collaboration with the district administration.
Objectives
- To enrich the students personality and deepen their understanding of the social environment in which they live.
- To develop socio-economic awareness and encourage the students to impart the same to the illiterate community of the area adopted.
- To develop socio-economic activities designed to tackle social problems.
Incentives & Weightage
- The college awards concessions and incentives to the best NSS Volunteers.
- The volunteers get additional 3 percent marks in aggregate for seeking admission to higher class after graduation.
- Punjab State Youth Award of Rs.5,000 is given to volunteers who give distinguished social and national services.
- One special excursion trip/picnic is arranged for NSS volunteers.
- NSS volunteers would get a special 10 percent discount on the total cost of all the college trips and tours.
- Best NSS Volunteer is honoured on Annual Awards Day.
- Many private sector organizations give extra weightage to those volunteers who participate in community service.
Community Development and Service under NSS
- An online workshop on “Sustainable Practices and Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)” was organized to celebrate World Environment Day under the aegis of Mission LiFE, an initiative of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Ajay Tanwar, an educationist and a counsellor.
- A stall featuring notebooks made from recycled materials was organised at the Mahatma Hansraj Library.
- A lecture on Ayurvedic Diet Principles as per Body Constitution Analysis by Dr. Naveen Arya was organised.
- Swachhata Hi Seva campaign was organised demonstrating the institution’s dedication to the Swachh Bharat Mission. Events included a Swachhata Rally, Oath-taking Ceremony, Tree Plantation Drive, and Cleanliness Drive, engaging around 100 volunteers and team members.
- Amrit Kalash Yatra was organised under Meri Matti Mera Desh campaign led by Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia
- A seven-day camp was organised which comprised various community service programs. These included:
- Lectures on cybercrime and water conservation, workshops on block printing, and talks on the harmful effects of using Chinese string in kite flying in adopted villages.
- A green initiative by planting saplings and distributing jute bags in adopted villages.
- Visit to an old age home, engaging with the elderly through various activities.
- A community outreach program in a nearby slum area, distributing blankets and snacks to residents, emphasizing youth empowerment and community responsibility.
- A cleanliness drive was organised to collect plastic in Company Bagh in collaboration with Municipal Corporation, Amritsar.
- A lecture on Women’s Health and Hygiene was organized. Dr. Sukhbir Singh, Mrs. Nandini Bansal, Mrs. Rajwant, and Miss Amandeep from Ladyfern Company graced the occasion as resource persons.
- A lecture on the topic Cervical Cancer and Breast Cancer was organized. Dr. Ruchika, M.S., Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Fortis Hospital, Amritsar, was the Chief Guest and the resource person
