Department of Zoology, BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar organized a DBT sponsored guest lecture on “Neuropsychiatric disorders” on 7th February, 2020. The resource person for this lecture was Dr. Harjot Singh Makkar, famous Neuropsychiatrist of Amritsar. Dr. Rashmi Kalia, Head, Department of Life Sciences, welcomed the guest with a sapling.
In this lecture, Dr. Harjot talked about psychology and the general psychological disorders. He diversified the topic by talking about anxiety, depression, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, perception and psychosis. He further discussed about other Neurotic and Psychotic disorders. He interacted with the students on a major issue pertaining to students life, exam stress and its symptoms such as shaking of legs, heavy breathing etc. He told how overuse of mobile phones has led to certain dissociative disorders in young generation and even in children below 5 years of age. Dr. Harjot even discussed how imbalance in neurochemicals has led to increase in suicidal tendencies, anger, depression and other panic disorders in the young as well as the old. Terms like Delusion and Hallucination were also explained in the lecture. At the end of the lecture students were advised how to cope up with stress by forming emotional bonds with family members and spending quality time with them. Mrs. Ashima, Ms. Payal, Mrs. Bhawana and other faculty members were present in the lecture. Principal, Dr. Pushpinder Walia presented Dr. Harjot with a memento as a token of gratitude.
