NSS Unit of BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar, organised a Cyber Awareness Programme in collaboration with District Saanjh Kendra, and Cybercrime Police Station, Amritsar Commissionerate. The programme was held under the patronage of Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia, while Inspector S. Paramjit Singh, Sub-inspector S. Narinderjeet Singh, Senior Constable S. Anmol Singh, and Constable Ms. Rajneet Kaur from District Saanjh Kendra, Amritsar, along with ASI Mr. Love Kumar, IT Expert Mr. Narinder Kumar, Senior Constable Ms. Amritpal Kaur, and S. Harjinder Singh from Cybercrime Police Station, Amritsar Commissionerate, were the resource persons for the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia said that since cybercrime has become rampant, internet users should abide by three rules for safe surfing. Firstly, they should never leave personal data on the internet. Secondly, they should never let anybody know the details of their bank accounts and financial transaction. Thirdly, they should never answer any message, which asks them to reveal their financial information such as passwords etc. Principal Dr. Walia emphasized that awareness and alertness is the key to safe and secure browsing.
Inspector S. Paramjit Singh dwelled upon the initiative taken by the Government of Punjab in 2011 in which 44 services related to the Police Department were delegated to Saanjh Kendras. He informed the audience that there are nine Saanjh Kendras in Amritsar.
Sub-inspector S. Narinderjeet Singh emphasised the urgency of awareness regarding cybercrime. He explained the meaning of cybercrime and cyber security measures to be taken in the wake of increasing cybercrime. He also informed the students about the procedure for lodging a complaint against cybercrime in the cyber cell.
ASI Mr. Love Kumar said that in order to protect oneself from cyber fraud, one must not share two things with strangers: OTP, and links containing personal details. He added that we should always lock our profile on social media handles. He highlighted the gravity of the increasing cybercrime rate.
Senior Constable Ms. Amritpal Kaur expatiated upon different types of cybercrime including, online scams, identity theft, bootstrap, cyberstalking, social engineering, flood attacks, potentially unwanted programmes, phishing attacks, and illegal contents.
Ms. Kiran Gupta, Head, PG Department of Computer Science and Applications, presented a vote of thanks and advised the participants to remain aware as well as alert about rampant cybercrime. The college faculty as well as a large number of students actively participated in the programme.
