BBK DAV College for Women celebrates National Sports Day to honour the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand

BBK DAV College for Women celebrated National Sports Day with great zeal and enthusiasm, honouring the enduring legacy of Major Dhyan Chand, one of India’s most iconic sports figures. The day is observed annually to pay tribute to the legendary hockey player and to promote the importance of sports and physical fitness in life. Various indigenous games and fun activities like Cycle Rally, Tug of War, Chess, yoga, Lemon Race and 50 mt. Race were organised under Fit India Campaign of Government of India held from 28th to 30th August 2025.

The event commenced with a warm welcome, marked by the presentation of saplings by Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia to the esteemed Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Amandeep Singh, Head, Department of Physical Education, and Director, Youth Welfare Department, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and Advocate Sudarshan Kapoor, Chairman, Local Advisory Committee.

In her address, the Principal stated that sports are the backbone of a healthy and progressive nation, contributing not only to physical well-being but also to personal development, discipline, and national unity. She further emphasized the increasing role of women in the field of sports, applauding their achievements and encouraging greater participation and recognition. Highlighting the college’s proud legacy, she noted that it has been home to several stalwart players who have represented the nation at both national and international levels, bringing honour to the institution. She extended her best wishes to the students and congratulated the Department of Physical Education for successfully organizing the event and fostering a culture of sportsmanship and active engagement.

Professor Dr. Amandeep Singh delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking keynote address, paying tribute to the extraordinary legacy of Major Dhyan Chand. He noted that the legendary sportsperson, fondly remembered as the ‘Hockey Wizard’, had scored over 400 goals during his illustrious career, a remarkable feat that reflected his unparalleled skill, precision, and command over the game. He further emphasized that it was this brilliance on the field that earned Major Dhyan Chand his iconic status in the annals of sports history. Addressing the students, he urged them to draw inspiration from his life, encouraging them to aspire fearlessly and pursue their goals with unwavering dedication and willpower.

As a meaningful part of the celebration, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia, Advocate Sudarshan Kapoor and Prof. Dr. Amandeep Singh along with faculty members of the Department of Physical Education as well as the students took a pledge to stay fit, engage in sports regularly, and to uphold the Olympic values of friendship, respect, and excellence in their lives.

A cake cutting ceremony was also held to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of India’s Hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. The event culminated in the presentation of awards and trophies to the players. Madan Lal Dhingra team, winner of Tug of War competition, was awarded with Major Dhyan Chand Trophy.

Dr. Sweety Bala, Head, Department of Physical Education, presented the vote of thanks. Mr. Anurag, Department of Computer Science, Dr. Lalit Gopal, Head, Department of Design, and Ms. Savita, Department of Physical Education, were also present on the occasion.
