An Expert Talk on Process of Innovation Development & Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and Commercialisation of Lab Technologies & Tech-Transfer

BBK DAV College for Women organised a one-day expert talk on “Process of Innovation Development & Technology Readiness Level (TRL)” and “Commercialisation of Lab Technologies & Tech-Transfer” under the “ R & D and Innovation” theme on 20th February 2025 in the laboratories of Post-Graduate Department of Computer Science and Applications. The resource person for the same was Mr. Gagandeep Singh, Data Analyst and Co-Founder, AOSC Technologies, Amritsar.

The talk aimed to provide insights into the journey from idea generation to technology readiness and commercialization, helping participants understand the significance of technology transfer. Experts from the field of innovation and technology commercialization were invited to share their knowledge and experiences. The session also encouraged collaborations between the institution and industry to enhance learning opportunities.

The students gained a clear understanding of the process of moving through Technology Readiness Level (TRL) stages, which involves bridging the gap between research and practical application. They learned about the importance of prototyping, testing, and validation, as well as the funding and support required at each stage of the TRL process.

The speaker also provided valuable insights into business models for lab technologies, discussing various commercialization pathways such as startups, partnerships, and licensing, along with effective go-to-market strategies for research-based technologies. Additionally, the session covered funding options, including grants, venture capital, and industry collaborations.

The students were made aware of the challenges in commercializing lab technologies, including key barriers in the lab-to-market transition, the need to bridge the gap between academia and industry, and best practices for successful technology transfer. Overall, the session equipped students with a comprehensive understanding of the journey from research to commercialization, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges involved.

The students enthusiastically engaged in case studies and interactive exercises, which focused on successful examples of lab technologies that had been effectively commercialized. Through group discussions and hands-on exercises, they explored various commercialization strategies, gaining practical insights into the process of bringing research-based innovations to the market. This interactive approach allowed them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved in technology commercialization.

The talk successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of innovation processes, TRL stages, and commercializing lab-based technologies by effective use of generative AI in the business operations. The interactive discussions and expert insights provided a structured approach to converting research into market-ready solutions. Overall, the expert talk was well-received, with positive feedback highlighting its relevance in bridging the gap between research and industry applications.

Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia lauded the initiative of Institution’s Innovation Council. She added that such expert talks should be organised from time to time to keep the students updated with the latest developments in the technology.

The event was conducted in offline mode with the participation of approximately 90 students and 20 faculty members.
