BBK DAV College for Women organized an extension lecture by Dr. Parminder Singh, Department of Physical Education, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, on “Physical Activity and Weight Management”. While welcoming the resource person, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia remarked that weight management is a pertinent issue in the current scenario and that incorporating physical activity into one’s lifestyle is crucial to its implementation.
Dr. Parminder Singh began the lecture by accentuating the perils of obesity, an enormous health crisis. He made the student aware about classification of obesity by BMI, distinction between “essential fat” and “storage fat”, difference between “android obesity” and “gynoid obesity” and categorisation of obesity on the basis of cell size and number. The lecture dispensed gainful information about chronic diseases and maladies caused by obesity, its causes and preventive measures to counter this global menace with reference to the energy expenditure in the body. He further apprised the students with “nutritional programming” wherein he emphasized eating healthier foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and protein sources, limiting unhealthy foods such as refined grains, sweets, potatoes, red meat, processed meat, and stressed the importance of increasing physical activity, regulating sedentary activities and cautioned against long screen time in order to intercept this major health challenge.
Ms. Sweety Bala, Head, Department of Physical Education, presented the vote of thanks and Dr. Amandeep Kaur compered the event. Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia honoured the guest speaker with a memento and appreciated the efforts of the department for organising a truly valuable and instructive lecture to edify the young players.
