On the eve of National Girl Child day, NSS unit of BBK DAV College for Women organized a webinar on Menstrual Health & Hygiene Management. Aim of the webinar was to enlighten the students about menstrual cycle, changes which occur in female the body before and during menstruation, various measures which one should take to ensure clean, healthy and sterilized mensuration cycle and also about various taboos surrounding the issue.
Mrs. Nitya Chaudhary from Unicharm India was the resource person for the webinar. While addressing the session, Mrs. Nitya said that Menstruation hygiene is a comprehensive term which includes multiple factors like educating about menstruation, gender equality, empowerment, wellbeing, cleanliness etc. During menstruation, women are more susceptible to to the risk of infections. Use of unhygienic materials to absorb menstrual blood can cause vaginal infections and long-term effects on reproductive health. she added that everyone has different type of body and that’s why every woman has her own journey of menstruation cycle. So, if a woman faces any kind of mensuration issue, she should consult a doctor and should not panic. She suggested that women should focus on adopting healthy lifestyle like yoga, gym and balanced diet to have problem free periods. She added that mood swings is a common issue among adolescent girls while menstruation. They should not isolate themselves during this period, instead they should try to manage their moods by keeping themselves busy in creative activities.
While addressing the webinar, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia said that its unfortunate that in twenty first century massive stigma and taboo surrounds the topic of menstruation. That’s why it becomes difficult for the girls to talk and practice about menstruation hygiene. Need is to frame and practice efficient policies while understanding the magnitude of the problem. It will help in tackling the inequalities surrounding the issue.
