Title: BBK DAV College for Women celebrates Awards Day of Swachhata Pakhwara Scheme, An initiative towards clean India

BBK DAV College for Women celebrated Swachhata Pakhwara - 15 days cleanliness drive under UGC notification as a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. At the culmination of the two weeks long celebrations, a valedictory function was organized in which Prof. (Dr.) R.K. Mahajan, Dean Colleges, GNDU was the Chief Guest and Dr. Shivaji Rai, Head, CTVS Department, Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, was the Guest of Honour. The winners of various competitions organized under the Swachh Bharat Pakhwara Scheme were also awarded.

Welcoming the guests, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia said that cleanliness is the primary concern of the Government of India. BBK DAV College for Women has always been working diligently in sync with this goal of the government. She further said that the students, being the driving force of a nation, should come forward and provide a new impetus to the cause of making India a clean nation. Dwelling upon the details of the programme, she added that during the 15 days programme, the college organized various events and rallies to spread awareness about the significance of cleanliness and hygiene. On the first day, the college observed Clean Campus Day by making the campus litter-free. The students were educated about the use of separate dustbins for a disposal of organic and inorganic waste. Also, an oath-taking ceremony was conducted in which the students and the faculty of the college pledged to keep the environment clean. On the following days, college hostel and mess were cleaned, ensuring healthy living for the students.

As a part of this awareness programme, essay writing, elocution, poetry writing and poster making competitions were organized by the college in which students participated with zeal and enthusiasm. Besides this, a tree plantation drive was held in the college campus. NSS Volunteers of the college visited the dumping yard and Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar where they were apprised of waste disposal techniques. Spreading the message of hygiene, the volunteers visited the college’s adopted village Qila Jiwan Singh as well as Nishkam Seva School for the underprivileged children, educating villagers & the students about the significance of maintaining clean and green environment.

Appreciating the college's initiative, Prof. Dr. R.K. Mahajan appealed the students to change the mindset of littering. He added that education can play a major role in bringing about this change. Sh. Sudershan Kapoor, Chairman, Local Managing Committee, gave a vote of thanks. Sh. Sanjiv Diwan, Sanitary Inspector, Sh. Baaj Singh, Sanitary Supervisor, Mrs. Manju Duggal, Convenor of the programme, NSS Programme officers Ms. Surbhi Sethi and Ms. Priya Sharma, along with their team members, Co-convenors of the programme, students and other faculty members, were present in the programme.
